After a disappointing year in 2005, the blockbuster season 2006 looks even more crowded. Variety reports the studios are releasing tentpole movies every week for a ten-week street beginning in May.

Among them are Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Shrek the Third, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Spider-Man 3, Ocean's Thirteen and The Simpsons Movie.

With a few more proven franchises and sequels to higher quality films than we had in 2006, it looks better. But look at the sluggish performance of Superman Returns despite apparent in-built appeal. The audience is a strange beast and anything can happen.
