The latest video game turned movie treatment was actually a bit more interesting than I thought it would be in the development of the characters - seemingly an anachronism in a brainless action movie.

A team of commandoes are sent via a teleporter-style technology to an installation on Mars where contact has been lost with a group of scientists who were working on something appropriately dark and sinister. Once there they find the place overrun with misshapen monsters who it seems are the scientists themselves.

Turning the assumption that the lead character of The Sarge (The Rock) will be the hero on its head, the first person shooter sequence modelled on the game itself, the slickness of the effects and a tone of dirty, bloody grime lift it up above the usual level of video game adaptation action films. That may be partly due to the skill of director Andrzej Bartkowiak, formlery a DOP on some of the highest calobre action films from the last 20 years.
