Drop Dead Fred

Year: 1991
Director: Ate de Jong
Cast: Phoebe Cates, Rik Mayall, Marsha Mason, Bridget Fonda, Carrie Fisher, Ron Eldard
A bizarre coupling for a comedy in Rik Mayall and Phoebe Cates, but it somehow worked.

Cates Lizzie, a mousy girl with no sense of self worth who's never grown up because of her domineering mother, instead who was nurtured through her childhood by imaginary friend Drop Dead Fred (Mayall).

But Fred was real, and when she most needs him, he turns up back in her life after being locked in a jack-in-the-box while she's grown up.

Fred proceeds to wreck her life by destroying everything around her, from the furniture to her relationships, and ironically (but predictably) brings her into her own and out from under all the shadows.

Great casting made an otherwise pretty dull idea much more interesting and much funnier than it deserved to be.
