Heathers

Year: 1989
Director: Michael Lehmann
Cast: Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannon Doherty
A strange melding of genres (high school A list drama infused with murderous rebellion) that, although it's the whole point of the film, doesn't always work too well. One reason is because you never know when the visuals are serious or cartoonish allegory (the girls playing croquet with Ryder's head, buried up to the neck in the grass), the other is that you never really know what the story is about. Some great visuals and ideas but a plot and premise quickly forgotten. Slater is a high school rebel whose intentions you can never work out and to Ryder pledges an inexplicable allegiance that doesn't stick.
