Rocky -like tale of coming into one's own (maybe a coincidence that the director was the helmer of the original Rocky) as a teenager to a new town is hounded by bullies, falls in love and all seems hopeless until he's befriended by a mysterious of Obi Wan Kenobi figure in the form of the Japanese handyman in his apartments.
The iconic Mr Miyagi teaches Daniel everything he needs to know about believing in himself and finding balance through karate so he can beat the bullies in the big tournament, get the girl and become the hero within. Sounds more schamltzy and old fashioned than it is, but told with a mature voice that hit a chord with everyone who's ever felt left out or bullied as a teenager (all of us).
