L’Idole

Year: 2002
Production Co: Euro Space
Director: Samantha Lang
Writer: Samantha Lang
Cast: Leelee Sobieski, James Hong
Aussie director Samantha Lang weaves a beautifully shot tapestry, but she shows more skill in filmmaking prowess than in concocting an interesting story.

When an enigmatic young woman moves into an apartment building, she strikes up an unlikely friendship with an aged Asian man and they find themselves needing each other - much to the irritation and jealousy of other tenants.

Leelee Sobieski turns in a passionte turn, years ahead of the Hollywood thriller fodder she's been most visible in, and veteran Asian American actor James Hong is the picture of grace. Beautiful and luxuriant colours and cinematography make it more than watchable, but far from the most interesting tale.
