The Vanishing

Year: 1993
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Director: George Sluizer
Writer: Todd Graff
Cast: Kiefer Sutherland, Jeff Bridges, Nancy Travis, Sandra Bullock

A strange choice of films for the director, having made the original in France only five years previously. After his girlfriend (Bullock) goes missing at a petrol station on holidays, a young man (Sutherland) is obsessed. When he meets an understanding woman (Travis) three years later, he's just this side of insane trying to find what happened to her.

The psychopath who abducted and murdered her (Bridges, in a chilling role that shows his considerable range beautifully) decides to reveal himself and what he did. Tense and disturbing throughout, with an apparently much more satisfying ending that the original, no doubt written in for American audiences.
