Filmism.net Dispatch September 24, 2007
The coolest news in movies recently is the intention of Todd (Spawn producer) McFarlane and Warner Bros to revisit The Wizard of Oz, but based on a toy line McFarlane released a few years back that had a dominatrix-like, buxom Dorothy and a savage, brutish Toto.
It looked good until McFarlane said they were going to tone down the sex and violence to make a PG version. How cool would a hardcore, bloody, sex-crazed Wizard of Oz be? And what a waste of money it'll be just making the same story again, only with Dorothy wearing jeans and checking her Facebook account on the (yellow brick) road?
There's also a live action Snow White coming up, although any dedicated video shop trawlers will note there's been one (albeit not very good) starring Sigourney Weaver from 1997.
More tawdry remake news is that Len (Die Hard 4.0 and Underworld) Wiseman will do the Escape from New York update. Sounds as thrilling as Powerpuff girls to me.
In tech news, Paramount have thrown their weight behind HD DVD, so Blu-ray slips a notch and the battle's getting hotter.
Ed Norton and Brad Pitt are getting back together which doesn't sound too interesting, but ask any fans of Fight Club what they think.
And in the silliest revelation of at least the last month, Seth Rogen of The 40 Year Old Virgin and Superbad is writing (!) the big screen Green Hornet update.
