Filmism.net Dispatch September 15, 2008
It seems everyone involved with the bloated, overstuffed Chinese banquet that was Spider-Man 3 has forgotten what it was like, with both Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi signing on to numbers 4 and 5. Sony has announced it wants to make them back to back to keep costs down. I hope they employ a team of killer editors to keep the fat down as well.
But in the most exciting movie news I think I've ever heard in my life, Sony's also announced it wants to make a third Ghostbusters film, with all the original principals.
No, the second one wasn't much cop, but it was Ivan Reitman and Columbia's 1984 original that more than any other film put me on the path to full time movie love. I'd like nothing more than to see an older, crankier Venkman, Stanz and Spengler reteam.
The only possible snags? Aykroyd and Ramis aren't writing it, with two exec producers of the US version of The Office given the golden pen, and consider Ramis and Murray haven't spoken in close to 15 years, I don't know how they'll wrangle that one.
