There's no stopping stripper-turned screenwriter Diablo Cody, who's now doing the adaptation of 80s teen series Sweet Valley High. But with Jennifer's Body doing lacklustre business in the US, her newly minted commercial career might be dead before it's left the gate. Juno 2, anyone?
We said goodbye to an actor this week not a lot of people know by name, but you know the distinctive face and voice Tom Hanks' creepy neigbour-who-might-be-a-murderer from The Burbs and supermarket manager Mr Wormwood from Innerspace. His name was Henry Gibson, and he worked for directors as varied as Joe Dante and P T Anderson during his 46 year film career.
I was really excited to hear that Stephen (Traffic, Syriana) Gaghan was doing another film, an action thriller. Expect a movie with as much brains as it has balls.
It's one of those 'I can't Believe It Hasn't Been Done' ideas, but after zealously guarding its untarnished image through careful media management for the last half century, Mattel is finally awarding a golden goose by letting Universal make the Barbie movie. Cue endless column inches of feminist debate...
In more doll news, Columbia may be taking up the Masters of the Universe movie after Universal passed.
Another remake, this time with two large differences. First, it's of a brilliant film – Cronenberg's The Fly. Second, it's being remade by Cronenberg himself. He'll never do it as good as the first guy...hang on.
I also think 3D is the new DVD, with so many films being earmarked for 3D treatment and re-release (Toy Story, Star Wars, Titanic) it can only be the attempts by a Hollywood desperate to raise profit margins they're trying to invent a whole new sales channel.
