Filmism.net Dispatch November 1, 2009
There's an Asian invasion coming! On the heels of Mao Zedong apologist epic The Founding of a Republic comes the first ever film being shot in the Shaolin temple, starring Jackie Chan. Soon after is Chow Yun Fat's action comedy and then the Matrix stunt guy's first action drama.
It's no real surprise to me the fourth Mad Max (Fury Road) film is going ahead. The property is a lot like Halo – there was always going to be too much money at stake for it not to happen, it was just a matter of the planets aligning and the best deal being hammered out. Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy are in it, but will it be the same without Max himself, with Mel Gibson definitely not involved?
I recently read some character notes on the upcoming Conan rejig on Moviehole.net and it makes for mirthsome reading if you want to sum up what Hollywood does best. The male characters are all a range of nationalities, ages and backgrounds, but the first thing said about every female character? An age range of 18 and 30 and all described as 'beautiful'.
It's also no real surprise that Neil Blomkamp's next film has been greenlit after the blistering success of District 9, and word is it'll be another sci fi actioner.
I was interested in the Invictus trailer. Oscar bait for sure, with Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela, Matt Damon doing an accent (the Academy loves that) and Hollywood royalty Clint Eastwood behind the camera. But... a rugby movie?
It was a long time coming (and not much less certain that Mad Max or Halo), but Men in Black III is also being prepped as we speak.
