101 Dalmatians

Year: 1996
Director: Steven Herek
Cast: Glenn Close, Joely Richardson, Jeff Daniels, Hugh Laurie
One of old Disney's favourite and most original and charming cartoons prostituted for a 90's audience of sophisticates (ie kids who are 10 times as market savvy as their parents were). It sticks to the essential plot - nasty fashion designer Cruella De Vil (Close) who wants to steal a bundle of dalmation pups to make a coat and sends trademark Disney nincompoops to steal them amid the love developing between their owners (Richardson and Daniels). But it's littered throughout with faux-cartoon slapstick violence and unsubtle gags that spoil the whole thing. Maybe it would have been better if the cartoon had never existed.
