The Assassin

Year: 1993
Production Co: Art Linson Productions
Studio: Warner Bros
Director: John Badham
Producer: Art Linson
Cast: Bridget Fonda, Gabriel Byrne, Dermot Mulroney, Miguel Ferrer
One of Hollywood's consistently good action directors (Badham) brings a remake of Luc Besson's La Femme Nikita to the screen with star then on the rise Bridget Fonda, and the result is a very good action movie, deeper than most (as is usually the case when the hero is a someone we can believe is emotional and conflicted rather than your stock standard Schwarzenegger/Stallone hardhead).

A junkie cop killer is sentenced with execution, but after her fatal injection, awakens in a top secret government facility where her minder (Byrne) explains that she is to be a covert government assassin; trained to kill, given assignments and carrying them out unquestioningly.

This she does with clinical efficiency until the inevitable happens and she falls in love and wants out. But how can a legally dead woman who knows as much as she does? Harvey Keitel steals the show as The Cleaner.
