My friends and I were ballistic over it. Some lady from Punchbowl ended up winning it, but by then the marketing was deep under our skin. Beverly Hills Cop 2 was a highly anticipated sequel thanks to a huge buzz (and not just a Ferrari competition).
Consequently it did much better than it deserved to, and the total was far more than the sum of its stereotypical cop movie parts. When a gang of criminals leaving clues according to the descending letters of the alphabet strike LA, Foley is called back over thanks to his friends from the original Bogomil (Cox), Rosewood (Reinhold) and Taggart (Ashton).
Prochnow and Nielsen play two very stereotypical, ice cold Eurovillains, and Bruckheimer/Simpson protégé Tony Scott brings a highly stylised look to a very tired genre that revitalised it for a new generation (and built on Martin Brest's work in the original).
