Buddha’s Lost Children

Year: 2006
Production Co: Zetigeist Films
Director: Mark Verkerk
An ex boxer-turned Buddhist monk collects horses and orphaned, malnourished children in his far north Thailand monastery, wielding his own special kind of boisterous, unsentimental love to boys who've never known it.

It's a lovely but not especially thrilling subject, but where Mark Verkerk's direction really shines is in the way he shoots the story as if it's a poignant drama (which it is). He blocks a shot with a sweeping camera move or pan with such finesse the movie tricks you into thinking you're watching an epic, cinematic thrill ride instead of a documentary.
