Crimson Tide

Year: 1995
Director: Tony Scott
Producer: Jerry Bruckheimer/Don Simpson
Cast: Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, James Gandolfini, Viggo Mortensen, Steve Zahn, Rick Schroder
This engaging and well-acted thriller comes from the smart end of Jerry Bruckheimer's brain, the part not concerned with music videos and money shot visuals. But Tony Scott got more serious about the work rather than just being a Simpson and Bruckheimer hack the bigger he got after Top Gun and Days of Thunder.

Washington and Hackman own the show as the competing Captain and XO of a navy sub that may or may not be in the middle of a nuclear war. The two battle wits and loyalties as the increasingly edgy proceedings tell upon them both.

Scott makes good use of the claustrophobic setting to ingratiate a sense of unease throughout the movie as things go from bad to worse, and together with two masters at the peak of their skills, it's a great movie that'll grip you till the end.
