Unlike any of those movies, Del Toro's calling card is completely uninteresting pap about an artefact that contains a beetle which gives it's owner eternal life, except that they have to drink blood.
A lot more could have been done with it; the horror was never explored, the characters were indistinct, and the whole thing was boring.
