The Deer Hunter

It's possible this is indeed the searing, brutal account of courage and friendship that won Michael Cimino Best Picture and Best Director like everyone says it is.

But someone should have explained to all concerned that the basis for all drama is conflict. After forty five minutes, all that had happened is a bunch of deadbeats had left work at a smelter of some sort, sat in a bar getting smashed and gone to a wedding. The only inkling of anything dramatic was De Niro asking a ridiculously young Walken if he thinks about Vietnam.

Maybe I missed something extraordinary by turning it off, but by then I had better things to do with my time.
