I Spit on Your Grave

Year: 1978
Production Co: Cinemagic Pictures
Director: Meir Zarchi
Cast: Camille Keaton
Another classic of the video nasty era alongside Cannibal Holocaust, The Last House on the Left and Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom, with beautiful writer Jennifer (Keaton) hiring a cabin in the woods to complete her novel.

Four local goons take a shine to her, and the second act of the film is a horrific depiction of each one brutally raping her. Just when you think it's over, another one has a go at her, until the most awful scene where she's dragged herself back to the cabin, undressed, dishevelled and finally safe. She reaches for the phone and the last thug's foot appears in frame to kick the phone over and she's in for it again.

In the most extreme chick revenge fantasy, she then uses her feminine wiles to trick each one into her confidence, dispatching them in a variety of grisly ways – not the least of which is cutting the leader's penis off in the bath to let him bleed to death crawling down the stairs.

Archetypal grindhouse with all the production and filmmaking trappings thereof, and with a mythology bigger than itself.
