The Ice Harvest

Year: 2005
Production Co: Focus Features
Director: Harold Ramis
Cast: John Cusack, Billy Bob Thornton, Oliver Platt, Connie Neilsen, Randy Quaid

I expected a lot more from this flat heist comedy. Cusack and Thornton are two white collar crims who commit their sting on Christmas eve, intending to lay low for a day or two and then skip town.

But a seamy group of characters, from a local mob boss to an unbelievably sexy lawyer, gradually bring their plans undone until they don't even trust each other.

Huge subplots - such as that of Cusack's friend Platt, now married to Cusack's ex-wife - go nowhere, and you wonder at times what movie you're supposed to be watching.

The violence is too jarring to belong in a comedy, and it's not particularly funny either. Everyone involved has done much better.
