Chatter about this film abounded before and during its release. Writer/director Black was an action film hack from way back with the Lethal Weapon films, and by all accounts he was turning the action genre on it's head by mashing it with a noir comedy about the seamy side of LA.

Bumbling crook Harry (Downey Jr) stumbles into an audition running from the cops and the agent and director present mistake him for an actor putting on a fantastic performance.

In the ensuing case of mistaken identity, he crosses paths with a beautiful struggling actress (Moynahan) a sardonic, connected and gay private detective (Kilmer) and the high profile murder mystery he finds himself an unwitting part of.

The barbs at movies and Hollywood are sometimes broad and obvious, sometimes far less so, using the clichés and conventions of a Hollywood movie themselves to deliver them.

Plenty of laughs and a clever, self-referencing air put some new spins on a very shopworn genre.
