Meet the Parents

Year: 2000
Studio: Universal
Director: Jay Roach
Writer: Jay Roach
Cast: Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Teri Polo, Blythe Danner, Owen Wilson
Reinventing Robert De Niro as a comedy star was no easy task - films from Rocky & Bullwinkle to Showtime have tried and failed.

But Jay Austin Powers Roach found an ideal slot for his persona. He plays every young man's nightmare, a scary, obsessive alpha male who happens to be the father of Greg (Stiller) wife to be.

The single joke - that Jack (De Niro) makes Greg's life hell as he tries to impress his girl Pam's (Polo) family - isn't overstretched thanks to some zingy chemistry between Stiller and De Niro, most of the rest of the cast doing their corporate-comedy best in the shadow of the leads.

A few stand out sequences, probably written in for the sake of the trailer ('I have nipples Greg, could you milk me?') and overall a few steps above the typical studio effort.
