What looked like a very asinine holiday comedy in fact was, but with enough charm and laughs to carry it off.
Ben Stiller's a deadbeat dad who can't hold a job and whom his former wife threatens to withhold his son's visits unless he can get some stability in his life.
He lands a gig as the nightwatchman at a museum, only to discover that, thanks to a mystical ancient Egyptian relic, all the exhibits come to life at bight, from the wax models and miniatures of people to the animals and enormous tyrannosaur skeleton.
It has the same well-trod 'grappling with superpowers' storyline as a million comic book hero movies and everything in the expected place and sequence, but some priceless performances (in particular Gervais) and genuine laughs make it worth seeing.
