The Opposite of Sex

Cast: Christina Ricci, Martin Donovan, Lisa Kudrow, Lyle Lovett
Much like Black Snake Moan years later, there's something about Christina Ricci playing a seductive vamp that just doesn't convince. She has the body and the attitude, but maybe it's the childlike face, the wide eyes set too far apart for her to look like a minx.

After the death of a father she hates, Dede (Ricci) runs, falling in with her gay half brother and going about seducing his boyfriend with what seems the express purpose of wrecking everyone's life she comes across, even to the extent of getting herself pregnant to do so.

Her character is hard to feel any sympathy for, and the fools who believe her seem to deserve everything they get. As such, it's not only a nasty movie, it's about people you don't really care about, and Dede upheaves everyone's life in such a cack-handed fashion it doesn't even pass as even slightly nourish with a femme fatale. I gather it was supposed to be a black comedy, but it also wasn't particularly funny.
