Riveting action thriller made better with great performances by the accomplished lead actors as a rogue army biologist (Hoffman) finds the truth about a toxic outbreak in a small Californian town.

Unbeknowns to anyone until the end (although it wasn't hard to guess), the army itself is responsible for the horrible agent - it's a weapon, and they're prepared to wipe the entire town off the map to keep it secret. The heroes must butt with two gung ho generals, the ever-evil Donald Sutherland and reluctant Morgan Freeman, who seeks redemption just in time.

Kevin Spacey put in a great early career appearance as the sarcastic researcher, and while Dustin Hoffman is a little hard to accept as the everyday Joe made a hero, he and Gooding Jr are great together in a half-serious, Laurel & Hardy way.

Enough of both the wryly humourous and the deadly serious.
