Pretty Woman

Year: 1990
Director: Garry Marshall
Cast: Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Ralph Bellamy, Jason Alexander, Laura San Giacomo
Fairtytale retelling of Pygmalion/My Fair Lady for the sugar-coated teen Hollywood set. It was the first big mainstream movie Richard Gere had been in in my time in years, and it struck me what a wooden actor he was despite his fame and popularity. Springboarded Roberts' first career incantation (which she promptly hobbled amid rumours of egomania and blossoming salary demands). Harmless and entertaining enough fairy floss which all concerned tried to replicate with Runaway Bride years later (which looked like a virtual carbon copy and was far too late to cash in on the director-star trio).
