Though it's unmistakably a Disney movie, there's an action movie sensibility here that's most welcome when you're expecting a whole lot of family piffle.
Apparently updating the original (which I haven't seen), a down on his luck cab driver (Johnson) picks up two enigmatic children in Las Vegas not long after a secretive overnment agency led by the nasty and calculating Cirian Hinds investigates a UFO crash.
The kids, it turns out, have come to Earth to search for the answer to the environmental catastrophe on their homeworld and have to stay one step ahead of an intergalactic assassin to return to their downed craft.
There's lots of opporunity for exciting chase, escape and shootout sequences as well as Johnson's considerable presence and comic talents, and it's all good clean fun.
Now if he can just balance all this paychequye-coasting with more challenging films like Southland Tales his talent will make him one of the most interesting actors we have despite his wrestling origins.
