The Santa Clause

Cute idea as Tim Allen's divorced father accidentally kills Santa and, on putting on the suit, becomes the next in line. The simple premise is somehow stretched across the whole movie convincingly without it being so dumb or sugary it's only for kids. Some classic lines and scenes (the little girl remembering his lactose intolerance, the 1200 year old elf thinking he's hitting on her).
Much of the comedy deals with Allen's character's physical descent into his new persona (increasingly fat, unable to shave fast enough) until he comes into his own, and brings the Christmas miracle to everyone in life, including psychologist stepfather Reinhold who's been trying to convince the kid there's no Santa Clause through the whole movie.
