Joe Carnahan bought us a solid drama with lots of action and tension in his debut Narc. This time he abandons the dramatic kudos to make a straight shooting action film, and what he leaves out in drama he makes up for in good old-fashioned gun-blazing violence.

The Aces of the title is a favoured mob son turned snitch (Piven, expanding his range once again), and when a price tag looms over his head, the most fearsome professional killers in the land descend upon the Nevada hotel where he's holed up in the penthouse suite, living off paranoia, drugs and hookers by the truckload.

When the two FBI agents (Liotta and Reynolds) overhear the double cross that will result in Aces' hit, they hightail it to the site of an impending slaughter while their shadowy boss (Garcia) pulls the strings thanks to a plot McGuffin that will form the twist.

Meanwhile, there's shootings, killings, double crosses, double plays and bloodshed to spare as they killers star warring over the turf and the FBI desperately try to keep a lid on the carnage and keep their star witness alive.

Old school cool, plenty of blood, snappy and with a Tarantinoesque cast of interesting characters; what's not to like?
