The year this film came out it scooped the pools at the Australian Film Institute awards, resulting in much back slapping and self-congratulation on behalf of the black turtle-necked Australian cinerati.

The deeper story is that 2004 was notable for such cinematic treasures as You and Your Stupid Mate, and since the quality of Australian movies were at a historic low, there were no other movies worth awarding. It's a shame then that writer/director Cate Shortland's movie wasn't nearly as impeccable as her timing.

Because beneath the beautiful cinematography sheen of the NSW snowfields location, it's another movie about a hot young chick shedding her kit at every opportunity. The glossy PR brochure probably said something about a young woman's journey of sexual discovery to learn what love is, but I'd bet most audiences ensured the glacial pace and mumbled dialogue just to see Abbie Cornish roll around in bed with Sam Worthington.

They're supplied by a host of PC caricature-alikes, all of whom do little to advance a story almost totally devoid of any plot. What was it the philosopher said about every crumb being a feast to a starving man?
