THX 1138

Year: 1971
Production Co: American Zoetrope
Director: George Lucas
Writer: George Lucas/Walter Murch
Cast: Donald Pleasance, Robert Duvall, Sid Haig
A highly stylised and visually impressive but lamely scripted instalment into the ultra-futuristic Big Brother stories of the time (like Logan's Run and the far superior 1984). In a society with the pat Orwellian/Huxleyan trappings (everyone named by numbers, spotlessly clean, sexual love is forbidden), a man (Pleasance) tries to rebel as usual, and that's the only part of the plot worth remembering. The same Lucas we see on screen today - some of the best visual director's skills in the world and the writing talent of a third grader.
