Turner and Hooch

Year: 1989
Director: Roger Spottiswoode
Cast: Tom Hanks, Mare Winningham, Craig T Nelson, Reginald Veljohnson
Hanks' transition from comic goofball to serious dramatic actor meets Hollywood's brief infatuation with human/animal love hate relationships (a la K9). Run of the mill plot sees cop Hanks inherit the Bull Mastiff of a murdered dock manager, fall in love, come to love the adorably droopy beast and single handedly defeat the bad guys from his own department. Nicely made showcase for Hank's abilities (toned down considerably form his Bachelor Party days) gets exciting and sad between the funny, but altogether nothing special.
