A meta attempt by Paulie Shore to poke fun at his own fallen star in Hollywood. If you wonder what happened to one of the most annoying comics ever given his own platform (on MTV in the 1990s), this film probably won't tell you, but you'll have as much fun as Shore has imagining it.
The conceit is that Shore, his salad days far behind him, decides to fake his own death in order to stoke new interest in his career. His plan is to come out and admit it was all a fake when everybody loves him again, celebrities and fans line up one after the other to extol his comic genius.
But it backfires when Paulie becomes the most hated man in America for his lie and is sent to the slammer where he finally gets the redemption he's looking for.
At least, that's the backbone of the story. The rest of it is a bunch of Hollywood gags by cameos of former stars (much like Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star), and if you grew up watching movies or TV in the 80s and 90s you'll recognise a lot of faces.
Some of the jokes are amusing enough to keep you watching, and they're all at the expense of both Shore and Hollywood's famed vacuousness, but the actual story (involving a redneck and rabid Son In Law fan from the deep south) stretches it all a bit thin.
If it was his attempt to get back on top, it ironically made almost no money and was seen by almost nobody.
