Great directors if you're a beret-wearing cineaste, that is. Actress and documentarian Angela Ismailos gets a decent amount of time with some of the most iconic directors whose films you pretend to have seen while you're in cine-literate company (before you go home and watch Back to the Future on DVD again).

There's no real direction or cohesive point to the film, something Ismailos herself admits during her explanatory voiceover. She's just a big fan of these people and wants to ask them about their inspirations, careers, methods and political beliefs where applicable (for example, did you know Bernardo Bertolucci is a committed communist?).

David Lynch, Todd Haynes, John Sayles and Richard Linklater represent the American contingent, and it's Linklater who's gone the closest to the mainstream of everyone featured. Other than that it's a parade of Europe's finest (Ken Loach) and often most incendiary (Catherine Breillart).

There are some interesting comments in it if you're a fan either of the personalities the movie covers or the world of alternative filmmaking. Consider it a moving pictures version of Rebels of the Backlot for the European-style arthouse.
